Forever Is My Love (Stay In May)

Leave me not in Autumn

     For the cooling winds would colour my city walks

     With chilling thoughts and leaves would crackle in twilight

          As steps would stop at some gray door;

Leave me not in Winter

     For foggy windows would weep

     And sharp rains pierce my woolen armor

          While a cold key would turn

          In some faraway town;

Leave me not in Spring for church bells ring

     And echo over the village square where I kissed you

     As my heart warmed in the late night drizzle;

Neither leave me in Summer

     For the winking waters would reflect

     The bustle of the neon city and crowds

     Of solitary jesters would play their multihearted parts

          In a universal drama lacking but this lonely clown.

Let not the earth go 'round without you with me.

Leave me not in the morning for the sun would hide

     Its golden face and the sky would turn ashen.

Leave me not at the noontime for even the rush

     Of city traffic would freeze and be crushed.

Neither leave me at day's end

     For my soul would send

     A piercing scream that would the heavens rend;

And leave me not by moonlight

     For even the midnight's glow

     Would click shut like a bolt on a beloved house.

Never leave me on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,

Thursday, Friday, nor on a weekend, for the flavors

     Of my meat and drink would fade to blandness.

Neither leave me in August, for it is the time of year

     When I want to kiss you, to love you, to hold you dear.

Don't leave in September for my love is yet young

     And your eyes are in wonder at what God has done.

And stay in October when goblins call and we laugh together.

Oh stay in November when I'll wrap you with love's arms

     And take you to the symphony or a glitzy picture show.

Please stay in December for the fireside chats and so much more

     Than I could express in mere words on this day.

Be here in January when you'll read my eyes at dawn

     And love is the story I'll whisper in your ear, my love.

Love me in February and forsake not this heart

     That would break if you should not love me.

Rather stay with me in March and hold my hands tightly,

     Gently, and place your sweet kiss on my lips again.

In April be my friend, my lover, my wife be mine

And stay in May, for all that would otherwise await you

     Is lifeless compared to this love I would give and give you

Even in June, so stay close and love me night and day.

Leave me not in July but come closer and as I pray,

     Promise me that forever you'll stay.

Never do I want to lose you, Beautiful Darling,

Forever I want to love you, Precious One.

Please be mine forever and I'll be good for you.

Love me now, now as I stand with outstretched hand,

Know how true I am and will be as I ask you, too,

To say as I say I love you I do.

I will in my day bless the life

God gave me by you and though night might

Separate-- for a moment-- longer I'll stay.
