McAllen, Tx July 21, 2005 - Regional and local Starbucks coffee shop management has recently engaged in talks with Rio Grande Valley poet singer Vicente Reyes about bringing live! poetry reading and guitar vocal music to the Harlingen, Texas Starbucks that opened in July 2005 on Ed Carey Dr. and the first stand alone Valley Starbucks located on North 10th St in McAllen, Texas. The event will be similar to the one previously hosted by Reyes at the McAllen Barnes and Noble Bookstore in-store Starbucks when the store first opened. That event [see announcement online at www.thepoetsdiary.com] was attended by students and faculty from the English Department at University of Texas Pan American. Notable guests included Mrs. J. Vackar of Bert Ogden Motors, daughter of the late great Bert Ogden. Also present were Professor Leonard Bloom and his wife the artist and Counselor Ingrid Bloom. Other UTPA faculty members and notables were also present, and their presence enhanced the atmosphere and thrilled those who spoke with them. The crowd was standing room only and the event was memorable. Many thanks (here again) to all who brought and shared their original poetry. What we could not do on that occasion was have live music because the Barnes & Noble Starbucks is located inside the library atmosphere of a bookstore. This event will be different in that these Harlingen and McAllen Starbucks locations open their doors to this literary and musical happening. The music will consist of vocals and amplified acoustic guitar. The songs will alternate with poetry reading by Reyes for variety's sake. You may bring one to three poems or more and depending on the amount of people who want to contribute you will alternate with others present. |
The size of the crowd will be limited only in accordance to safety regulations. There will be plenty of Starbucks products available for any permissible crowd. This is not an event for children. If you bring children they will not be allowed to read behind the microphone but you as a parent may read a child's original poem if deemed appropriate by the reviewer. Nursery rhymes are not considered poetry for this event. If you are a published writer you may not promote a specific book you have written but you may share an excerpt. This is not an event designed to promote anyone who may gain commercially from the exposure. What we want to do is provide a platform for local talent because there is no other similar event in the Rio Grande Valley. With these simple rules in mind please focus on having a good time. Come enjoy fine coffee and pastries and participate in one of the Rio Grande Valley's cultural events. Vicente Reyes will recite original romantic poetry as posted on his website located at http://www.thepoetsdiary.com and that of great poets of all time such as John Keats, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edgar Allen Poe, and others. The music he will play on acoustic guitar will be from artists popular during the 1960s. There will be no tickets sold and there is no charge to attend this event. Starbucks does not endorse the content of any poem nor song and only Vicente Reyes or the guest reciting a poem is responsible for the material presented. |
The plan is to have an open mic night for poetry reading at both locations but on different days. The Mcallen Starbucks at 10th and Trenton (see location details below) begins this event on Saturday August 6 at 3 pm. Please visit the Harlingen Starbucks for Harlingen performances in December. You may not bring alcoholic or non alcoholic drinks nor food from outside the coffee shop. The management reserves the right to refuse the participation of any patron at it's discretion. You are invited to attend and bring your original or favorite classic poetry to share by reading. Poems will be reviewed prior to being read aloud. Remember this is a family atmosphere so do not bring any material that might be offensive or obscene. We respect and honor the First Amendment and the right to free speech, yet this is neither a political nor religious event, but a neutral cultural gathering. These the events as they are scheduled in the Summer and Autumn of 2005. For more information contact Angie at the Starbucks in Harlingen or J. J. Rodriguez at the Starbucks in McAllen or Vicente Reyes by e-mail at the following e-mail address: publisher@rgvlaw.com
