Summer (for Marion)

The sands are golden shimmers in the amethyst waters I wish

You were here with me on this day when the autumn beach winds swish

About my straw hat provoking memories of that delightful summer

When my hands oiled your tanned body and we kissed.

The coral colors of the time framed our beach house aura,

And your melodic voice was lighter than the breeze.

At evening seeking your warmth and your laughing eyes,

I always found delight and endless pleasure.

I could bridge the latitudes with a finger and we sailed

Across the sky holding hands and whispering sweet nothings.

We wove the shores into one country and in the night

I remember you weaving colorful threads too.

It’s a precious image I keep of you,

I could envision you preparing stockings for children,

That you spoke of as in a dream that I could never capture.

Me the port-less sailor on the ship of adventure leading nowhere,

Hungering for the sweet fruit of the tree of life,

Chasing moons and a sun and the horizon’s edging

Seeking, groping, grabbing, loving but only touching,

What I could not plant on this salty sand.

I have hungered again for my long departed friend,

But God grant me safe passage beyond today

And I may see you again.
